COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, has plagued our world for over a year now and has caused devastating struggles all over the United States. Symptoms of the coronavirus can range from mild to severe, and can affect everyone differently. Currently, older individuals and people with pre-existing health conditions are at risk of severe COVID-19 cases.
Here at California Recovery Center, our lab offers COVID-19 testing. We are working tirelessly to help the fight against COVID-19. We’d also like to discuss today what COVID-19 is, why it’s dangerous, the types of testing we offer at our lab, and what we can do to help you with your COVID-19 testing needs!
What Is COVID-19?
Coronavirus Disease 2019 is the cause of a respiratory illness outbreak that was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. Since December of 2019, Covid-19 cases have been identified and growing in a number of countries all over the world. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause different illnesses that range from a common cold to more severe diseases such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) or MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome).
There are numerous symptoms of COVID-19. These symptoms may appear anywhere between 2-14 days after exposure and can include:
Cough
Shortness of breath
Fever
Headaches/migraines
Muscle pain/weakness
Sore throat
Loss of taste and/or loss of small
Chills with repeated shaking
Why Is COVID-19 Dangerous?
COVID-19 is dangerous because of the range of severity within this virus. COVID-19 can be something less severe (i.e., a common cold) or something very severe (i.e., SARS). COVID-19 can be very dangerous when it comes to higher-risk populations such as older adults and people who suffer from a serious chronic illness or different comorbidities. COVID-19 is also dangerous because there is little preexisting immunity to SARS-CoV-2, which means that every individual is currently susceptible to a potential infection.
What Types of Tests Are Offered at Sacramento COVID Testing?
There are two different kinds of COVID-19 tests including a viral test that checks for an active infection, and an antibody test that can indicate a previous infection to the virus.
Viral Testing - This is conducted in many different forms/manners including nasal swabs, saliva tests, etc. These tests will be sent out to the lab for processing and then may take up to 10 days to receive the results. Some locations do offer rapid COVID-19 tests that process the tests on-location and you could get the results back in about an hour.
Antibody Testing - This is conducted to show if you have had a COVID-19 infection in the past. Antibodies could take 3 weeks to develop in your body. The presence of these COVID-19 antibodies can help in the prevention of becoming infected with the same virus again though it is unknown how long this protection/prevention from the virus may last.
At our Sacramento COVID testing site, we offer drive-through PRC testing, nasal, and oropharyngeal swabs with the results that can arrive as fast as 24 hours. We currently do not offer antibody testing.
